/var/yp/makedbm problems when creating passwd.byuid

Greetings-

I've encountered a problem with NIS on DU 4.0b when trying to update
the password files via makedbm (invoked by cd'ing to /var/yp and typing
make).

The message is:

problem storing 43315 jlrufebe:NoLogin:43315:15:Kim Pt:/home/a452/jlrufebe:/bin/csh

If I delete the above entry, another entry in the file is flagged as a problem.
There are entries before and after the above entry that are just fine and
are correctly placed in the passwd.byuid and passwd.byname files. (I know this
is true by checking with makedbm -u).

The uid only appears in the file once; it is definately unique.
The entry also gets placed in the passwd.byname file, so only the uid
version fails.

Of course, with the entry missing in the passwd.byuid file, the user
can not login to the account, and they get the error message
"Can't rewrite terminal control entry for ttyp0".

Can anyone explain what causes this error and, more importantly, how to
correct it?

Thanks in advance for any help.
ray
