Hello managers,

and soon numerous replies came in. Thank you all!
To the first point (cd ~/dir):
obviously the behaviour of resolving "~" is depending on what you are
using: NIS, NFS and SHELL.
Some said they have seen similar behaviour with tcsh, others said they
had not seen such "hangings" and some suggested to check the NFS parameters...
I mainly use tcsh... (but recently changed to bash and *think* i remember
such a hang with bash too?)
And sure we use NIS and NFS too... (to speed things up ;-)
To the second point (MAKEDEV...):
Here i can learn again to be more specific with my questions...
My "problem" was not the tz->rmt change, but the feature that whatever
you enter as the first Tape-ScsiID you end up with "0" (e.g. "0")
and then "1" and so on...
Obviously this is an archaic feature from the very first days of unix?
Nevertheless i would like to have at least a customizable feature, whether
i like it "archaic" or like with disks (3->3). We like to have the same
IDs for DATs and Exabytes on any machine, whether we have both drives
attached or only one, where there are tapes available.
