Since my summary post, I recieved much more helpful information. Here are
two of the best:

>From Thomas Leitner:
>I think that the cheapest solution is a PowerStorm 3D10 card. It
>runs up to 1280x1024 _at_ 75Hz and 256 Colors and is fully suported
>by DU right out of the box. You can contact Alpha resellers like
>www.dcginc.com for a quotation. I'm sure that these cards can be
>had for something like US$200-300.

>If you're after a faster card, the PowerStorm 4D10T is a good
>alternative.
>In Germany, the card is about US$300 and is supported by the latest
>Open3D software for DU.
---------------------------------

>From John Francini
>Some Number Nine cards will work on Digital UNIX, because that's what
>Compaq has included on several models of their AlphaServers, such as the
>AlphaServer 1200s that we have here.
i
>Digital UNIX sees it as an S3 Trio 64V+ card.

Thanks a million for all of your help,
