moving the mail spool to $HOME

Hi All,

We have two systems here that are used for student/staff email. We
currently have about 12,000 users per system, which leads to LARGE
/var/spool/mail directory sizes which are starting to cause performance
problems. I have modified sendmail.cf on our test system to deliver
mail to $HOME/mail/INBOX using procmail, and I have fixed most of the
third party sofware we use for mail to use new location, but I can't
convince the standard DU tools (Mail, mail, mailx, binmail) to use the
new location. I tried setting the MAIL environment variable, but this
doesn't seem to make any difference. The best I have been able to do
is put a symbolic link in /var/spool/mail to the actual file, a
solution I don't like. Does anyone know of a way to force mail, mailx,
etc, to look for the mail file in an alternate location?
