I've got a AlphaServer 800. It comes with an MMJ (annoying DEQ
non-standard) serial interface for the console. There are also 2 nice
DB9 ports. I'd really like to get the console running on COM2 (the 9pin
COM1 seems to be "for modems only") - is it possible? I can
"set console serial" from SRM, but don't see anyplace to specify a
non-default serial port...
Thanks, as always, to
Dr. Tom Blinn <tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com>
who poked around and came up with the following:
You have basically two choices:
1) Use the MMJ (the DB9 connector is Digital part H8571-J - female end)
2) Get out your AlphaServer 800 documentation and read up on the Remote
Console Management (or Remote Management Console, it gets called both). It
is in Chapter 8 of the hardware manual.
Basically, you need to enable modem for COM1 (set com1_modem on)
and you may need to set up other things as well. Once you've done that, you
can set up the system to call out through the modem port (COM1 DB9) when it
detects any number of odd conditions. Or you can enable remote management
through a dial in modem connection. If you've got a null modem connection and
manage to get your dumb terminal (or PC) to look enough like a modem to log in,
then as far as I can tell from a cursory glance at the documentation, you can
actually use the COM1 modem port as the serial console.
I'm sticking with the MMJ, though may try to nullmodem the COM1
DB9 port just for giggles - if that works, I'll let folks know.
