Too much swap space ?

Hi,

I am new to UNIX system admin so forgive me if this is a stupid question,
but can you have too much swap space ?
We have an Alphastation 500/333 with 160Mb RAM and 1Gb swap space. From my
experience with other platforms this seems a high ratio of swap to real. The
users are complaining of sluggish performance, it uses immediate mode at the
moment but I am going to change it to over-commitment mode which will
hopefully help, but should I reduce the swap size at the same time ?
The application used on the workstation is AVS, so any tips on optimising
AVS on an Alpha, in particular it's use of memory would be greatly
appreciated.

Cheers Chris.
