I received one comment (David Warren) reporting "no problems with Sol 2 and
DEC Unix", a very helpful explanation by Mariel Feder with answers to my
specific questions about NIS+ management, while all remaining replies
(thanks to Ronald Loftin, Patrick L. Nolan, Cathy Smith,
KWhite_at_talisman-energy.com, Frank Cusack, David Thorburn-Gundlach and
Scott F. Woods)
were unanimous in suggesting not to go to NIS+, but to stay with NIS.
Apparently NIS comes built-in with Solaris 2.6 (or even 2.5.1) and is
available as add-on for 2.5. My colleagues have already put their hand on the
kits, and we plan to go that way.
It's a real pity that the Sun documentation we just bought did not even
mention this possibility, and gave the impression one was forced to use NIS+
Many thanks to everybody.
