In an earlier query, I had asked about the inability to telnet and ftp
from an Alpha running DU 4.0B to an Encore system running the proprietary
MPX operating system. A SunOS 4.1.x system was able to connect to the
Encore, but not the Alpha. A packet sniffer reported that the difference
in IP headers was that the Alpha was setting the Do Not Fragment flag.
At the suggestion of a VMS user (the query was also posted to
comp.sys.dec), the problem was probably in the MTU Discovery area.
I found that by setting the pmtu_enable parameter in the inet area using
dxkerneltuner to zero fixed the problem. dxkerneltuner is used to modify
kernel parameters, immediately and/or at boot time.
Thanks for the responses.
BTW - I have Solaris 2.6 and SGI Irix 6.x systems with the same basic
problem [more accurately, the Encore has the problem, but I can't patch
it :( ]. DU is the only OS I've found yet that allows this particular
kernel mod.
