Hi Folks,

I asked if it was possible to disable negotiation of synchronous transfer
mode in the driver as our custom SCSI interface appears to be acting wierd.

Thanks to the following for their rapid responses:

alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com
hl_at_tekla.fi (harald)
Knut.Hellebo_at_nho.hydro.com (DAMN GOOD COFFEE!)
tpb_at_zk3.dec.com (Dr. Thomas Blinn)

Most suggestions were to add a flag in a device characteristic block in
/sys/data/cam_data.c to disable SYNC negotiation (SZ_NOSYNC).
Unfortunately, we never put such an entry in our cam_data.c, as the
device does not behave like any type of standard SCSI device. (We're
using /dev/cam to access it.) However, a DEC SCSI/CAM export suggested
(through Dr. Blinn) that I reprogram our device to send out a REQ/ACK
offset of 0 during a negotiation, instead of a MESSAGE REJECT. This
will effectively put the device into ASYNC mode without the possibility
of ill effects from sendign out a MESSAGE REJECT. This is the method
we'll try.

PS:
I just heard that Compaq bought DEC. I hope this doesn't mean the end
of DUNIX. However, I would be interested if this means that DUNIX would
soon be available on Compaq PCs. It's somewhat ironic; I'm currently
working on a PCI device driver on a Compaq PC running Solaris X86. It
sure would be nice to have the horsepower of some of my Alpha systems on
this Pentium system.
