Hi everyone,
I have a number of questions to do with sendmail, but first
I will give you some background.
I have very few users, but they are scattered throughout the
United Kingdom, all accessing their mail via a web browser
with pop3 and smtp parameters pointing to our UNIX box (a
DEC AlphaServer 1000 4/266 running DU 3.2c - to add
complication this box is also a member of two different
domains). Very recently some 'bright spark' (admittedly
this is the politest description I can think of) at another
academic institution discovered that, as their own
mailserver was exceedly slow, their could send mail via our
smtp server. After talking to other system administrators I
have found that this 'feature|problem' is not just limited
to my UNIX box.
And now the questions :-
1. How can I (simply) configure my sendmail to only forward
mail from an allowed (but disparate) bunch of valid users
and tell the rest to bugger off?
2. How would I limit this? Surely I can't do this by just
checking the 'to' and 'from' email addresses to see if
each mail is either for one of my users, or being sent
by one of my users? Is it possible to limit to
particular IP numbers? Would I want to?
3. Surely members of this group have solved this problem
many times over, but how?
Any help appreciated, I will ofcourse summarise for the
list.
Cheers,
mark
