volume manager control

I'm attempting to place a disk under volume manager control. I'm using
voldiskadm, and I'm entering 1) Add or initialize a disk, after which I
enter
the disk name and get the following:

Select disk device to add [<disk/partition name>, list, q, ?] rz10g
datadg

    Disk device rz10g cannot be defined.
cat: cannot open /etc/vol/reconfig.d/tmp.d/vx1.2281
    Error:

Any ideas?
