[Q] - Using tip to verify modem

I am trying to use tip to verify that my modem is dialing out correctly.
However, I am not familiar with tip. This tool was suggested to me and
looked simple at first.

I think there are some configurations that need to be setup. I get the
following error:

arthur:susrod# tip -2400 2066227585
tip2400: missing device spec

I know from the man pages that a .tiprc file should exist in my home
directory, and I do have one. Now what should go in it? The man pages
aren't very clear.

The error message seems to indicate that either my modem device should
be specified in my tiprc (but with what variable?) or that the modem is
not configured correctly on my system. Others have used this modem in
the past, but not recently. It is connected and powered on.

Modem: external DECmodemV32
Device file: /dev/ttya01m
/etc/mdm: ACU ttya01m - Any DECmodemV32 \D

Any suggestion?
