Portmapper not responding...still trying -- on shutdown.

I have serveral diskless DU 4.0a bootp Mod 255 workstations of which a
few give the message which when I ussue the shutdown -h command go to
the blue screen and issue the message:

Portmapper not responding...still trying

then hang there. Not all of the bootp clients do this. Most
immediately go to the >>> prompt but all the machines are identical.
There has been some trouble with NFS hanging at the CDE login after
username and password have been entered but I increased the number of
nsfd's on the bootp server and that seemed to have cleared that up.

Help me. Please.
