---------------------------------------------------
Intial Problem:
I now understand what happened but not why.
The inital problem was I installed a new version of ABAQUS on to a DEC
Alpha running Digitial Unix, V3.2. I ftped the files from a P.C up to
the RAID drive of the Alpha. It now appears that DEC needs a different
install script to set-up ABAQUS, the script appeared to run fine and
install the correct components as it went along.
Once the script finished the machine hung.
When rebooted, I recieved errors like
/usr/sbin/rcmgr: egrep: cannot execute

then the machine would stick at the

Digital Unix Version V3.2 (brunel.tay.ac.uk) console

Login:
(it would not ask for a password, just kept repeating the above)
-----------------------------------------
Solution:
1. The solution to this was to boot in to single user mode (boot -fl s)
2. run bcheckrc to mount the drives etc, this was not affected by the
script
3. Reset all the permissions,(chmod 775) in
/usr/bin
/usr/bin/X11, and other directories
These were none executable.

This problem has been resolved but I am not sure what other damage has
been done, so the group may hear from me in the future :)

So once again Thank you everyone for their help

Regards
Grant
