How to Compile mySQL v3.21.x on Digital UNIX with GCC v2.7.2

Has anyone out there successfully compiled the mySQL DBMS
(http://www.tcx.se or http://epsilon.hpnc.com) on a DEC Alpha running
Digital UNIX v4.0x, using the GNU C Compiler (GCC) v2.7.2 (or later)?

I don't have the native DEC C/C++ compilers, and would like to compile
the source code distribution of mySQL, but I'm running into all sorts of
problems. I don't want to do a lot of trial-and-error coding/kludging
to make it work, if I can avoid it. I know there's at least one binary
distribution for Digital UNIX available, but I'd rather compile the code
myself and test it.

Any help would be appreciated. Specifically, I'd like to know what
compiler flags you had to add or modify, what mySQL source code files
you had to modify (if any), and/or any Makefile changes you had to make.

Please reply directly to me, unless you believe your info would be of
use to others on the mailing list. Thanks.
