upgrade from 4.0b->4.0d, patches a problem?

I currently run 4.0b with the jumbo patch kit 5 installed.
I now want to do an upgrade install to 4.0d, can someone
tell me if I can upgrade even with the patches installed,
or do I need to do a clean install of 4.0d?
