I was doing things quite wrong. I received some very good pointers to
http://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/Alpha/firmware. There is a lot of good
stuff under there to tell how to do this. Although it is by far easier to
have the firmware CD in hand to do this. The CSLG folks missed that CD when
they left them for me to pick up. They also didn't give me the release
notes, install guide, etc. At least I can read most of that online quite
easily. The collective wisdom of this list has done the job again. Thanks.
