Q. printing to parallel port on alpha

Hi, sorry for too simple question but I cannot find
the answer anywhere..

We have Alpha3000 running D.U3.2. It did not
have a printer attached to it before (no /dev/lp0 file)

Now I want to attach Epsons Stylus 600 printer,
which comes with parallel port connector.
I am planning to use ghostscript as a filter,
but the question is
how do I create lp0 or whatever proper devise is
for the parallel port?
I run
> /dev/MAKEDEV lp , which made some lp0 file.

Now the demon says that the printer is "(offline?)"
