Greetings, O Mighty and experienced readers!!...

Please, if you can help me with my humble problem, answer this
letter as soon as you can see (or maybe feel?) the right answer...

Look: I have recently reinstalled DEC OSF/1 on my little computer..
(I had to do it becasue of dirty crash happened to me some time
ago)...
And everything seem to be OK -- users can log in and even log out...
root can do anything he wants, and it works rather stable...
so, it looks very nice...but for one little ...er...`feature':

---
bash# whoami
root
bash# su oust
shell-init: could not get current directory: getwd: can't stat .
bash$ passwd
job-working-directory: could not get current directory: getwd: can't stat
.
insufficient privileges
Password not changed: cannot access protected password entry.
bash$ su
job-working-directory: could not get current directory: getwd: can't stat
.
su: insufficient privileges
---
And I get that nasty 'insufficient privilegies' message each time I try
to execute 'matrix.conf'-related copmmand...(chfn,chsh,s,login,passwd)
(except for login, perhaps)...
Have you got any ideas?...can it be file-permissions? (look at appendix)
Maybe it is something else? Something more unpredictable? something more
challenging?...
Any comments and ideas would be GREATLY appreiated...
Thank you in advance,
Andrei Ousti.

There are some file permissions I thought could matter somehow:
/etc/auth
-rw-rw-r-- 1 auth auth 553 Aug 9 1994 authorize
-rw-rw-r-- 1 auth auth 587 Aug 9 1994 default
-rw-rw-r-- 1 auth auth 1830 Aug 9 1994 devassign
-rw-rw-r-- 1 auth auth 20631 Aug 9 1994 files
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root system 940 Feb 9 20:23 gr_id_map
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root system 3828 Feb 9 21:32 pw_id_map
-rw-rw-r-- 1 auth auth 490 Aug 9 1994 subsystems
-rw-rw-r-- 1 auth auth 1755 Feb 9 23:56 ttys
..
/tcb/files/auth/o/oust:
-rw-rw---- 1 auth auth 291 Feb 9 23:34 oust
