Marc Kazigian of our DIGITAL UNIX PUBLICATIONS group came up with a list of
the Top Ten COOL Things about DIGITAL UNIX Version 4.0D Documentation. I
asked him if we could share them with you, our alpha-osf-managers, since you
are dependent on timely and accurate documentation, and he agreed. One of
the really neat things about the V4.0D documentation is that the new format
for the CD lets you use it with a PC or Mac browser; if you've got a PC or
Mac (especially a portable with a CD reader) you can take the documentation
with you and use it there. And it's now easy to get extra copies of the CD.
(By the way, when we decided to change the CD format from a UFS file system
to an ISO9660 format, we made the kernel able to dynamically load the CDFS
support so you don't have to rebuild to mount the documentation CD, or any
other ISO9660 format CD, for that matter.)
Anyway, enough editorializing, here's Marc's list:

Subject: Top Ten COOL Things about DIGITAL UNIX Version 4.0D Documentation
The DIGITAL UNIX Publications Group is proud of the improvements we
made to our documentation set for the DIGITAL UNIX Version 4.0D
release. We'd like to share some of our accomplishments with you.
(Scroll to the bottom for a pointer to the DIGITAL UNIX documentation
on the Web.)
Top Ten COOL Things about DIGITAL UNIX Version 4.0D Documentation:
10) We now provide information about new features and retired
interfaces from previous releases in the form of text files on
the DIGITAL UNIX V4.0D Operating System, Volume 1 CD-ROM (in the
mnt-pnt/DOCUMENTATION/TEXT directory). As usual, in the same
directory, we also provide lists of CLD fixes that have been
incorporated into the base operating system.
9) We updated about 850 reference pages and added about 40 reference
pages to document new and changed features.
8) We updated the following books to document new and changed features:
_Release Notes,_ _Documentation Overview,_ _Asynchronous Transfer
Mode,_ _ULTRIX to DIGITAL UNIX Migration,_ _DEC C Language
Reference Manual,_ and _Guide to DECThreads._
7) We added a new book, _System Configuration and Tuning,_ to the
documentation set. It takes the place of and improves upon the
_System Tuning and Performance Management_ guide from previous
releases. Check it out!
6) We gave the Documentation Library (on the DIGITAL UNIX V4.0D
Documentation, Volume 1 CD-ROM) a COOL new look.
5) We replaced all of the remaining Bookreader books on the
Documentation CD-ROM with HTML versions to pave the way for the
retirement of the dxbook application in a future release.
4) We now provide most of our documentation in PDF format as well as
HTML format. Although the PDF files did not ship on the DIGITAL
UNIX V4.0D Documentation, Volume 1 CD-ROM, they are available from
the DIGITAL UNIX Publications external home page. The PDF files
and the latest version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader (for several
platforms) will ship on a future Documentation CD-ROM.
3) We added Netscape to the Personal Applications popup (where you
find "Terminal") on the CDE toolbar. This change makes it easier
for customers to find and start Netscape to view our documentation.
(Special thanks to the CDE team for their help in this area.)
2) We made the Documentation CD-ROM a separately orderable part
QA-MT4AA-G8 for $80 (a fraction of our competitors' prices), so
you can order as many as you need for your site.
And the #1 COOL Thing about DIGITAL UNIX Version 4.0D Documentation:
1) We now master the Documentation CD-ROM in ISO 9660 format (with
Rock Ridge Extensions), meaning that you can mount the CD-ROM on
most computers, including PCs and Macs. (Special thanks to the
Release Engineering team for their help in this area.) Windows 95
and Windows NT Version 4 (or later) even open the Documentation
Library with your default browser automatically. COOL!!!
To find out more about these COOL things, look at the _Release Notes
for Version 4.0D_ and the _Documentation Overview._ Both books can be
found in the online Documentation Library, which is available on the
DIGITAL UNIX Publications home page:
