Hello,
sorry for the delay. Here's a summary on manually re-creating a domin
without destroying data on it. Thanks to:

cd /etc/fdmns
mkdir test_domain
cd test_domain
ln -s /dev/rz0g rz0g
ln -s /dev/rz0h .
ln -s /dev/rz1g .
ln -s /dev/rz1h .
mkdir /test
mount test_domain#<users_fileset_name> /test

(The crucial step in which I failed was the last step. One has to
understand what's the difference between domain and fileset). In my case,
I had usr_domain, on it was filesystem labaled as usr, so:
mount test_domain#usr /test

Lars Bro(lbro_at_dscc.dk) also noted:
Then make the links /etc/fdmns/whatever/rz0g->/dev/rz0g and so on IN
EXACTLY THE SAME SEQUENCE AS THEY WERE ADDED BEFORE. That is the way
AdvFS determines what comes first (can you feel the chill down your
spine because you most certainly use NetWorker to back up /etc and you
dont know for sure that it recovers the files in DIRECTORY SLOT order,
it might as well be in alphabetical order...) Make an ls -f of
/etc/fdmns/*, print it out and hang it on your wall.

I must say, I did it before have read his message. Well, I want to say I
did it in some order, not sure if it was the original one. But noone other
reported that that it's dependant on the order.....

Checkout the System Administration Guide, Reconstructing the Directory
(8.7.2 in 4.0b). DO NOT RUN mkfdmn. If you do you will destroy the
existing data!

alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com

suggested also to have a look at ****advscan***. It searches drives
for AdvFS or LSM domain and can re-create them (mean re-create links in
/etc/fdmns, not destroying data).

Assuming the disks haven't changed from the above, just
rename the domain:
        mv /etc/fdmns/user_domain /etc/fdmns/test_domain
It's amazing that they don't document this even though
it is that simple.

As an aside, it's not a real good idea to partition a disk
then use both partitions in the same domain. It will work,
but you are incuring some extra overhead and not allowing
AdvFS to fully do it's job. Regards, Kurt

-------
Well, at the I was partitioning those drives was not experienced with DU
at all(just Linux and Irix), and my original idea was to have some spare
partitions, and in case of need to addvol to usr_domain#usr. So for that
reason I had that stupid configuration. This was one the reasons why I
decided NOT to run installupdate from 4.0B to 4.0D, but to start from
scratch on different partitions....

Thanks a lot
Martin
