Ghostscript as a printer filter with output to a laserjetIII is m uffing it.

Hi,

I've just down loaded gs5.10 to see whether it might overcome a problem
with sending mp converted postscript files to a laserjetIII via gs using
the output device ljet3. Basically the answer appears to be no. I was
previously using gs4.01 and although the output from the laserjetIII is
different it is still what I would call broken.

Unlike pstext which I also use to as an ascii2ps converter (and which I
don't have problems with when sending its output through gs to the
lasergetIII), mp adds a fancy headers and footers which seem to get gs
screwed, to such an extent that (a) the headers and footers are slightly
mangled in gs5.10, and (b) the text gets dropped altogether with both
4.01 and 5.10. Mind you gs4.01 messed the headers and footers up to a
greater extent. I was wondering if there were any ps/gs guru's that
might throw some light on the problem.

It doesn't seem to matter whether I use the version of mp that came with
Solaris 2.5 (I believe mp is bundled with Solaris, anyway I didn't put
it there) or the mp that I had downloaded and compiled on a DUnix4.0
machine. There is no problem with either mp when its output is sent to a
postscript printer. So I assume that the problem is a long standing bug
in gs.

I might add that I had a little trouble installing gs5.10, in the
compilation of gdefpdf.c a number of errors cropped up with respect to
the promoted type of some pointer arguments (eg "pdf_set_color",
"pdf_put_matrix"). Deleteing the appropriate entry from the DEVS lists
in unix-cc.mak fixed that little thing.

I'm sure the users here send a lot of tia with this message.
