My problem: with an Xplora X-tube from NCD, the <DEL> key erases
the next character in some applications (e.g.Netscape).
I received so far 2 answers from John Deacon <jrd_at_star.ucl.ac.uk>
and John Clarke <jclarke_at_dynalpha.gsfc.nasa.gov>.
I tested the first answer that I received (J. Deacon's) and it works
just great.

We had the same problem with the delete key on our NCD's deleting in
the "wrong direction" in Netscape and xmodmap never seemed to work
properly. I've now got the following in my .Xdefaults and it seems
to work fine:
*XmText.translations: #override \n\
Shift<Key>osfDelete: delete-next-character()\n\
<Key>osfDelete: delete-previous-character()\n
*XmTextField.translations: #override \n\
Shift<Key>osfDelete: delete-next-character()\n\
<Key>osfDelete: delete-previous-character()\n
