Well the problem is, for the moment, gone....
Allan E Johannesen pointed me to:
>From /usr/include/sysexits.h
# define EX_DB 79 /* database access error */
For the definition of error 79.
As per my previous message I simply removed the files it claimed it
couldn't access on the theory that opening a zero length file, when data
is expected might cause a problem. That fixed the error 79's. Then
I got the lock errors. Someone suggested killing all the joind
processes. I had thought of that, but I could not find any using
ps -ef. I guess they were starting and exiting too rapidly to catch.
Anyway, after ten minutes or so, the errors stopped.
I just wish I understood what happened so I could feel better about
whether the underlying problem is fixed or just temporarily quiet.
Thanks to all responders.
