Original post :
basically, I have an rz58 that just started spewing read and write errors
for about 4 hours before it caused the machine, a 5500, to halt. I was
looking for ideas on how to get the data off.
Answers:
What I forgot to mention was that the drive was HOT when it came out of
the R400 rack. Like *way* too hot to touch. It was equally hot when I
tried it in an expansion box on a 5000/260 (but the other drive in the box
was cool). This would lead me to think it was some sort of physical
failure on the drive part and there's nothing I can do. But I did try
alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com's and tschroed_at_acm.org's suggestions of trying to
run scu on it (I had to find a ultrix 4.4 system to try it on). scu gave
me this:
scu> verify media (and scan media) scu: 'read capacity' failed, EIO (5) -
I/O error scu: Sense Key = 0x2 = Unit is NOT ready,
Sense Code/Qualifier = (0x4, 0) = Logical unit not ready, cause not
reportable
and chpt just couldn't read the puppy:
# chpt -q /dev/rrz2c /dev/rrz2c chpt: cannot open /dev/rrz2c : I/O error
Now, the disk does spin up and uerf sees it. it's just not able to read
it.
thanks also to Mick Kappler <kappler_at_SECS.UCSC.EDU> who suggested giving
the drives time to boot up before the cpu. And to Girish Phadke
<PGIRISH_at_binariang.maxisnet.com.my> who suggested that the error log
showed the HDA going out and suggested rzdisk to rescue it.
