System hangs up when network goes down

Hi,
We have a DEC 3000 model 400 running DU4.0B. Whenever the network goes
down, the DEC locks up. Is there any parameter that can be set into the kernal
such that the failure of the network doesn't hang the DEC. The DEC is
used as a stand alone and is only connected to the ethernet in order to
receive Email and allow telnet sessions in and out.
