nis with secure passwd's

I'm setting up NIS, using the docs from Digital at
http://www.unix.digital/com/faqs/publications/base_doc/DOCUMENTATION/HTML/AA-PS2SC-TE_html/netadmin9.html

How do I set up NIS with a secure passwd table?

Right now NIS wants to use the /etc/passwd file which lists all passwords
as "*"

Also, I'm not sure where Digital stores the encrypted passwords... I'm use
to Solaris putting them in /etc/shadow

I'm setting this up under Digital Unix 4.0B
