How can I get libtiff.so recognized?

I'm trying to install a program on our 3000/600+DU4.0B that apparently
wants libtiff.so. The error that it gives is:

/sbin/loader: Fatal Error: cannot map libtiff.so

I've dug around and found LIBTIFF.SO on the free stuff CD. I put it in
/usr/shlib and renamed it in the lowercase. It still gave me an error. I
played around with the "ld" command and modifying LD_LIBRARY_PATH but
ultimately decided I have no idea what I'm doing and that I should stop
before I broke something (unsual self-awareness on my part, but I'm
learning!).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Harry
