Wierd problem with group memberships

I have just noticed a very wierd problem with group memberships on my
systems. (OS versions 4.0B and 3.2D)

When I query the group memberships for a user I seem to get wildly varying
results. ie two consecutive queries return truncated lists of groups

eg:

cuda$ groups ccjjb
system squid operator eamac dba oracle system oradba cchelpd majordomo cc
ftp class ccsys spam
^^^^^^ This is the correct list

cuda$ groups ccjjb
system squid operator system oradba cchelpd majordomo cc ftp class ccsys
spam

^^^^^^ Next invocation doesn't return correct list.

cuda$ groups ccjjb
system squid operator cc ftp class ccsys spam

^^^^^^ And again

cuda$ groups ccjjb
system squid operator oracle system oradba cchelpd majordomo cc ftp class
ccsys spam

^^^^^ Still not working

cuda$ groups ccjjb
system squid operator system oradba cchelpd majordomo cc ftp class ccsys
spam

^^^^^ And back to normal.

The above commands were invoked one after the other.

Our accounts and groups are stored using NIS. Is this the problem?
