RAID 5 Setup ?

Dear Sys Admins:

We've got 2 Alpha 4000 (2 - 300 mhz cpus and 1 gig of memory each) Servers
running DU 4.0a. They came from the distributor with the OS on an internal
4 gig drive and 3 storage trays with 6 - 4 gig drives each. The storage
trays are connected to a 3 channel controller. When I run the controller
config. software at the console prompt, I see that the drives are grouped
into 2 logical RAID 5 disks. Which makes sense because I see 2 mount points
for them at the OS level.

My question has to do with the way the logical drives are setup. Logical
disk 1 has a layout of: disk 1 on channel 1, disk 2 on channel 2, disk 3 on
channel 3, disk 4 on channel 1, etc. The same for logical drive 2. Is this
the most efficient way to set these up? Our Oracle 7.3.3.3 database that I
installed seems very slow to me even considering RAID 5's performance
reputation.

I've dealt with conventional disks (mirrored at the OS level) on Sun's
before and these new fangled RAID setups at the controller level have me
confused. Maybe this is the only way that you can set these up. I'm used
to spreading my data and indexes across as many mount points as possible.
Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve Walling
