Dear All,

This is on a new (unpatched yet) du4.0d alphaserver1200.

Trying to make a boot tape, using btcreate from the command line
fails.

The error line is:

Makefile:834: *** Recursive variable `target_machine' references itself
(eventually). Stop.

This is the log being created by the utility, (I've snipped lots
of the waffle)

---------------------------------------

You have started btcreate as follows :

 ./btcreate

                        BOOTABLE TAPE CREATION

The btcreate utility creates a bootable Standalone System (SAS)

<snip>

Kernel Configuration File specified : /usr/sys/conf/OMNI533
        Disk Partition : mfs
        Tape Drive : nrmt0h
        File systems included : yes
        Miniroot customizations : no

The following file systems were specified for back up:

        Device_Name Mount_Point File_Type Size
        root_domain#root / advfs 187796

Are the answers correct? (y/n) [y]:

Creating a new kernel...

*** KERNEL CONFIGURATION AND BUILD PROCEDURE ***

Saving /sys/conf/OMNI533.BOOTABLE as /sys/conf/OMNI533.BOOTABLE.bck

Do you want to edit the configuration file? (y/n) [n]:

*** PERFORMING KERNEL BUILD ***
Makefile:834: *** Recursive variable `target_machine' references itself (eventually). Stop.

*** WARNING ***
An error has occurred during system configuration. A partial listing
of the error log file (./errs) follows:

Makefile:834: *** Recursive variable `target_machine' references itself (eventually). Stop.
Press <RETURN> to continue:
Do you want to edit the configuration file? (y/n) [n]:
*** NOTE ***
A new kernel for this machine could not be successfully created.

Restoring original configuration file - /sys/conf/OMNI533.BOOTABLE
vmunix has not been built successfully, exiting btcreate.

-----------------------

NAy help to make a boot tape will be appreciated.
