SUMMARY: System panics (Dump setup)

Should the system panic, the crash dump is written

1. to the end of the primary swap partition eg. if the partition is 4GB
and the dump file is 400MB, it will begin writing at the 3.6GB mark.
2. to secondary swap, across multiple swap partitions if necessary (if the
primary swap is too small to accommodate the dump)
3. to secondary swap and then to primary swap, should secondary swap be
inadequate.
4. no crash dump written if both primary and secondary are inadequate in
size.

On reboot, the savecore command checks whether a crash dump has been made
and whether there is enough free filesystem space in which to save it. By
default, the dump will be saved to /var/adm/crash. The save area can be
changed by issuing the command
/usr/sbin/rcmgr set SAVECORE_DIR Path_in_which_to_save

To check right now where your crash dump would be saved, use
/usr/sbin/rcmgr get SAVECORE_DIR
If a null value is returned, this means it will be saved to the default
location, /var/adm/crash.

On DU v4.0D, the crash dump will be compressed by default and, because the
dump is a sparse file, the compression achieved is quite high (maybe 90%).

It would seem that having determined where the dump file will be
written, its just a matter of ensuring enough space is available on that
partition (and that sufficient swap has been configured).

Thanks to Alan Davis, Thomas Blinn, Kurt Carlson, Girish Phadke, John
Becker, Roberto Romani, Paul Belcher and others for their much appreciated
contributions.
