Hi,
thanks to all who replied. Volker Hejny advice to try scu scan seems to have
done the trick for me. The device is working again.
Here are the more detailed replies:

'no such device or address' means that the device is no longer recognized
by the system, the same result as you got with 'scu show edt'. If the
other SCSI devices are still running, the most obvious thing is, that
the exabyte is broken.
Another possibility is, that the Exabyte was switched off while you
rebooted the machine the last time. So you should try to reboot (or
use 'scu scan').
If this doesn't work, I would suggest to test the Exabyte on another
SCSI system.

Exabyte Drive dead
Power of the Exabyte drive dead (does it accept cleaning tapes, normal
tapes?)
SCSI cable disconnected

Tape drive reboot (power on and off), my be.....
It's so narrative of me.

"Not present" means that the SCSI driver doesn't know about
the device. Or at least, that it can't figure out what type
of device it is. What you're probably seeing that the driver
never removes devices from its tables, so it has a record
that something was there, but it doesn't respond anymore.
You should try a "scan edt" for the particular bus to see
if that will take it up. If not try a device reset. If
it is the only device on the bus, try a bus reset. If none
of those work, odds are it is broken.
Thanks for the quick help,
Martina
