unable to login (4.0d, c2, CDE)

Hi, guys (& gals :-))

I am having trouble with a new DU4.0d machine. We do not use C2 security in
house - but this is a deliverable machine the end of next week and the spec
calls for it.

After installing the OS and creating user accounts, we enabled C2 and rebooted
so that it takes effect.

So far, we have only logged in to the machine as root. Now we give it to the
engineers, and one tries to log in at the console through the CDE login
session.

C2 is very polite and lets us know when that engineer last logged in
successfully and last had an unsuccessful attempt. Click OK for that dialog
to go away - the screen blanks and we have once again a login session on the
machine.

The machine is a PC164 based system from Microway, if that makes any
difference. (It shouldnt, i would hope)

Command prompt login works fine for all users.

CDE login works fine for root but nobody else.

DEC support had me disable C2 with secsetup and reboot. Still unable to
login.

I spent about 2 hours with DEC support - he tried, but the machine is still
useless for now.

If I don't hear something better, I will reinstall 4.0d Sunday - our engineers
have to have the system on Monday or we lose the delivery date. Anybody got a
suggestion for me?

Thanks in advance.
