Q: DecUnix mt and other tape commands

Hello,

I have an AlphaServer 8400 running DecUnix 4.0B with a TZ887 tape loader. I
am used to using SunOS and Solaris systems where I can use the "mt status"
command to find out the position of the tape - for example, so I know if I
am
the beginning of the tape or not.

This doesn't seem possible on DecUnix. The status command spits out a bunch
of information, but it doesn't seem very helpful. Is there a way to know
the
position?

Here is what I get:

# mt -f /dev/nrmt1h status

DEVIOGET ELEMENT CONTENTS
---------------- --------
category DEV_TAPE
bus DEV_SCSI
interface SCSI
device TZ887
adpt_num 0
nexus_num 0
bus_num 0
ctlr_num 0
slave_num 1
dev_name tz
unit_num 1
soft_count 0
hard_count 0
stat 0

category_stat 200400
                        DEV_LOADER DEV_62500_BPI

DEVGETINFO ELEMENT CONTENTS
------------------ --------
media_status 0x0

unit_status 0x189
                        Ready Loader 2_FM_Close NO_Rewind Compacting
Buffered
record_size 0
density (current) 62500 BPI
density (on write) 0 BPI
Filemark Cnt <Not Valid>
Record Cnt <Not Valid>
Class 0 - <unspecified>

MTIOCGET ELEMENT CONTENTS
---------------- --------
mt_type MT_ISSCSI
mt_dsreg 0
mt_erreg 0
mt_resid 0

I'm already frustrated that I cannot use dump and must use tar to back up
specific files (i.e., not a whole filesystem or directory). Maybe nsr is
another possible solution to that. I saw that mentioned it some earlier
notes
but haven't researched it yet.

Out of curiosity, is either way more "compliant" than the other? Why does
the
DecUnix dump command not include this ability?

Thanks for any help or info you can provide.
