Hi,

We wish to upgrade our main AlphaStation 1000 server running Digital UNIX
V3.2c to the latest version V4.0d as part of our Year 2K strategy. From
the Alpha OSF Managers Archive I found only two relevant postings:

Mark S. Burrell <mark_at_adam.ac.uk>
http://www.ornl.gov/its/archives/mailing-lists/alpha-osf-managers/1998/03/msg00616.html
-- and --
Johan Erlank <j_erlank_at_sames.co.za>
http://www.ornl.gov/its/archives/mailing-lists/alpha-osf-managers/1998/02/msg00406.html

I was wondering if anybody has completed this upgrade path and wish to
share their knowledge and experience. I would like to resolve the
following issues:
        1) firmware version (currently 3.0)
        2) palcode version ?? (currently 1.35)
        3) how good is the automated upgrade?
        4) Would it be easier to store /etc/* /var/yp/* and start
           from scratch? eg CDROM installation
        5) Is there any documentation (according to Mark, apparently not)

I would dearly love to hear from anybody who has any experience or advice
as I'm sure we (and Mark + Johan) are not alone. I will summaries any
replies and post a full report on my personal experiences when I carry out
the upgrade (currently scheduled for the weekend of 16/17 of May, 1998).

Thank you for your attention.

Regards,
Rich
