Thanks for the assist. Problem solved!
A couple of you suggested DNS involvement. I didn't check that when the problem
first occurred since /etc/svcorder is local then bind, and I *thought* that
would send me to /etc/hosts before using dns. The hosts file is OK.
Anyway, I checked /etc/resolv.conf and that was the problem. We changed
our IP address a while back due to, well trust me, it would take too long
to explain.
Somehow this machine, which is a development platform, didn't get the
name server address updated. I fixed that and all is well in ftp land
again.
