Hi gang,
I asked how to analyze a core dump that had occurred as a result of our
name daemon dying on May 1st.
The answers I received suggested using dbx (see syntax below) and letting
DEC analyze it for me. I actually tried both, without success. (The problem
with DEC is while I was on the phone with them, I moved too far away from
my desk and dropped the damn phone! Neither they, nor I, ever called back.)
However, many of my respondents were folks who experienced the very same
thing on the same day. My suspicion is that we were the victims of an
attack that seems to have touched many systems along the way.
Looks like I will be working on BIND security!

Assuming you compiled your named with debugging, (-g3 etc), you might get
some useful info from using dbx:
dbx /path/to/named /path/to/core
in dbx, the 't' command should give you a stack trace, so you can see where
named bombed out.
