[SUMMARY] root file system full

Dear Gurus,

My problem: "df" reports that the root file system (150 Mb) is more
than 100% full. However, I can't find any abnormal file or directory
under / while "du" reports only a 60 Mb occupancy.

I received more than 20 answers in minutes! Thanks, colleagues!

The solution came from Allan Rollow (alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com) who
wrote this enlightening sentence:

MOUNTING A FILE SYSTEM ON A DIRECTORY HIDE ANY PREVIOUS CONTENTS
OF THAT DIRECTORY.

That was my problem: I THOUGHT I had written large files onto a disk
that was in fact NOT mounted. Hence I wrote the files into the mount
directory under /. Hence the "file system full"....

After having rebooted, the disk was mounted through fstab... and the
files in that directory were hidden!

Following Allan's suggestion, I unmounted my disks one by one and
checked the contents of their mount points. This enabled to find
the culprit.

Thanks Allan, and to all of you.

Jean-Loup
