upgrades vs. fresh installs?

Years ago, in ultrix, the consensus seemed to be that a fresh install was
safer than an upgrade. What is the current thought on this, going (in our case)
from DU 4.0b to DU 4.0d? Any info on how long an upgrade might take on a
dual-cpu 4100?
