hello all

i had a problem yesterday on an alphaserver 1200 running du4.0b where as
root i was unable to kill the process as root.
it was a
tar -xv <filename>
by one of the users on the system. I realise teh command should have been
tar -xvf <filename>.
i only realised when i tried to put in the backup tape. as the server was
reading or i dont know what it was doing with the tape drive but i couldnt
eject the tape with the previous nights backup.

1 can anybody give me a reason why i as root was unable to kill the process
or why the user was unable to killl it?
2 is there a command for telling what or who is writing or reading from the
tape drive

i only presumed it was this tar command that was doing it

to stop it in the end i had to restart it (bit drastic methinks)

tape drive is tlz10

cheers
