Upgrading a DU 3.2 machine to latest release of DU?

I've got a machine running DU 3.2 and we'd like to bring it to the
latest release of Digital Unix (4.0D?).
Looking through a manual I have for release 4.0B, it looks like the
upgrade path is a bit painful.

3.2 -> 3.2C -> 4.0A -> 4.0B (or maybe the latest release if Digital has
shown mercy on us).

Is the upgrade path to the latest release of DU still so cumbersome?

Also, how do I tell what exactly which sub-release I have? Doing a
"uname -a" on one of our machines allegedly running DU 4.0B only tells
me it's running 4.0. Not even sure if the 3.2 is straight 3.2, or one of
the later 3.2 releases.

Might it be adviseable to just wipe a machine clean instead of trying to
go through a cumbersome upgrade path?
There aren't many users on the machine in question and it doesn't see
all that much activity. What glitches might I run into
if I chose to start from scratch?

Thanks,
