Salvaging a tar tape

A user tried to untar a DLT tape with the following error:

%tar -xvf /dev/rmt2h
..
-rw------- 201/0 344 May 11 14:38:20 1998 bmute.mut
-rw-rw-rw- 201/0 2652176384 May 8 08:55:17 1998 GREGRID1
tar: tartape : This doesn't look like a tar archive
tar: tartape : Skipping to next file...
%

Apparently the tape had been tar-ed before the patch was applied to the
4.0D system. He told me that (1) the file GREGRID1 is actually about
6GB, and (2) there are other smaller (<2GB) files behind this large
file. I used dd and showed there are indeed over 10 GB behind this large
file.

The question is, can we salvage his data, specially those smaller files?
Thanks for your help.
