Running 8-bit programs on 24-bit displays

Hi all:
We have two image display programs (ximtool and SAOimage) which we use
to view/manipulate astronomical images. Neither of these programs can
run on 24-bit hardware. We just got two 600A/500's with 24-bit display
adapters, thus our problem. We need to run these two programs, but they
crash when the default Xserver is running on these machines. Is it
possible to:

        1) Change the bit depth on a per-session basis, so that users
who what to have 24-bit display will have it, while those users that
need to run SAOimage and ximtool can chose 8-bit for their work.

        OR

        2) If the above is not possible, run an 8-bit Xserver on our
hardware until the above programs support 24-bit displays.

Our graphics card is a PBXGB-AA

Thanks in advance,
Cheers,
--Lee
