Hello,
In my original post I asked if it was okay to installation of a Seagate
Barracuda 9Gb (ST39173N) within a AlphaStation 1000 4/233 to be held in a
StorageWorks carrier. My main concern was the these hard disk have been
reported to run very hot.
I must first thank the following people who replied:
Burch Seymour RTPS <bseymour_at_encore.com>
Patrick Farley <farley_at_Manassas1.TDS-GN.LMCO.COM>
John Cunningham <jcunningham_at_upei.ca>
"Monroe, David" <David_at_psds.com>
On one hand, Both Burch and John mentioned that this particular drive runs
particularly 'toasty' hot and probably needs a cooling fan. It's therefore
probably unwise to install them in our AlphaStation due to lack of
ventilation. John does mention that they have these disk in a SCSI tower
enclosures for their PC servers with plenty of air circulation.
On the other, David comments that the "...Seagate Barracuda 9GB (ST39173N)
drive will actually run cooler than the 4GB drive that was originally in
the carrier (assuming that you want to remove the 4GB drive from the
carrier and replace it with the 9GB drive). The challenge you may run
into is that the cable in the carrier for the drive light may not fit the
ST39173N drive. You can replace that cable if you need to have the drive
light working"
And finally, Patrick reconfirmed the existence of DEC's own 9Gb disk
(RZ1DB-CS).
I am therefore intending to buy DEC own hard disk (also covered by the
hardware contract). So DEC wins by 3 votes to 1.
Does anybody from DEC or Seagate wish to comment??
Regards,
Rich
