All of whom agreed that auto-negotiate was unreliable.
As per their suggestions we set both the Alpha and the SmartSwitch for
100BaseTX. (We also went full-duplex). I changed the running Alpha using
the command suggested by Tom:
lan_config -i tu0 -a 0 -s 100 -x 1
and will change it permanently in the console at next re-boot as all
continues to seems well after implementing these changes.
THANKS!!!

Original Question:
I have an Alpha 1000A 5/4 ( DU4.0D ) connected to a Cabletron
Smartswitch 6000.
It is the only thing on the switch at the moment.
The Alpha is set to auto negotiate which seems successful:
May 27 08:25:51 sunesis vmunix: tu0: auto negotiation on: will advertise
100Base
TX (UTP) port: full duplex
May 27 08:25:52 sunesis vmunix: tu0: link up: negotiated 100BaseTX: half
duplex
However the network on the switch gets slower and slower. Currently
pinging the Alpha results in a ridiculous:
64 bytes from 165.201.4.254: icmp_seq=7 ttl=64 time=582 ms
64 bytes from 165.201.4.254: icmp_seq=8 ttl=64 time=252 ms
64 bytes from 165.201.4.254: icmp_seq=9 ttl=64 time=146 ms
Eventually (every day or two) everything grinds to a complete stop and
the switch has to be re-set. (Re-booting the Alpha doesn't help.)
Messages show:
May 27 08:28:16 sunesis vmunix: tu0: link down
May 27 08:28:19 sunesis vmunix: tu0: link up: negotiated 100BaseTX: full
duplex
May 27 08:28:31 sunesis vmunix: tu0: link down
May 27 08:28:34 sunesis vmunix: tu0: link up: negotiated 100BaseTX: half
duplex
Should I suspect the switch as the problem or the Alpha being set to
auto negotiate?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
