Background: two Alpha 2000 servers with DU 4.0b; no patches.
We have two alpha servers (say A and B) situated in two different
buildings. All the disks on either machine are NFS-mounted on the
other machine.
We experience problems copying files to an AdvFS filesystem /u05
which is local to B and NFS-mounted on A. There are a few directories
on /u05 all of which are empty (placeholders) except one which
contains lots of files taking up about 77% of the entire disk.
Every night, a batch job runs on A that deletes all files in this
big directory and then attempts to copy another set of large files
from A. The problem we are experiencing is that `df /u05' on machine
B still reports 77% usage and so B will not accept the new set of
files.
The strange thing is that this number does get reset automagically to
less than 1% (as it should be) after several minutes! But, this time
period is not consistent.
Question: What would cause this behavior? Nobody uses these systems
at this time of the night (interactive or batch).
Thanks for any insight.
