This turned out to be a corrupt OS disk.
It would appear that installing DU on a ultrawide disk when the controller
is only wide causes the disk to forget it's ultra, when moved to the ultra
controller it screws the bus.
Re-installing the OS (and hence reformatting the disk) fixes the problem.
