Stimulated by responses so far I guess that more info in my
requirements would be useful.
We have a large network of Sun machines in which..
Each machine has a local copy of Solaris only, installed from the network
at intallation time. Everything else automounts, which is excellent as
I can keep a number of concurrent package versions and maintain only
one copy of each (we have close to 500 packages).
Which sounds to me like a hybrid of ris and dms. A nice feature of
Solaris however is the modular kernel which lets Sun distribute
Solaris without a C compiler and removes the need for kernel rebuilds.
The issue of kernel rebuilds for some layered products is still
less than clear to me. Perhaps you kind souls could disperse the fog
while I clean my specs.
My configuration is..
3 * DEC 4100 boxes in a MC cluster
8 * headless PW433au in a farm
11 * PW433au workstations distributed around the school in nooks and crannies
Cheers
