/ and /usr as AdvFS filesets problem

I'm running Digital Unix 3.2g. I tried to convert the root and /usr
file systems to AdvFS ( as described in chapter 8 of the System Admin.
manual ). The new filesets built ok and looked fine when I mounted them
on the existing system ( ie mounted as /newroot and /newusr ). I edited
the /etc/fstab file on the new root to reflect these file systems now
being AdvFS, shutdown and rebooted the new volume.

Initially the reboot looked fine, the kernel loaded and all the usual
messages came out. About the time the disks should be mounted it stopped
working. bcheckrc complained about a memory error. I restarted in single
user mode and found that the /etc/fstab file was not readable ( though it
was readable fine when that fileset was mounted as /newroot under the
old system ). All the other files I checked seemed fine. It appears my
editing of that file somehow messed it up so it couldn't be read when
I booted from that volume ( but when I returned to the original boot disk
and remounted the fileset as /newroot I could read /newroot/etc/fstab
just fine )

Any ideas as to why these problems might occur? One thing I'm suspicious
of is that the examples in the manual show each of / and /usr being built
in their own file domains - though this isn't noted as a requirement as
far as I can see. I built both these filesets into the same domain ( along
with some user data filesets ). Is this not allowed for / and /usr?
